This weekend, or some morning, it's hard to remember anymore, I was flipping through tv channels looking for something to watch. This fact alone makes me think it was the weekend. If I can't find something to watch on tv, and the internet isn't an option, it's only because I've exhausted it, and I only exhaust the internet on the weekend.
After cycling through the usual channels, and even scrolling down into the depths of my channel list and into the darkness that are the channels I can't afford to pay for I settled on a show called "Pop Up Video" on VH1. I soon discovered that this was a fantastic tv show, that I probably once knew about but had forgotten once I moved into the phase I'm in now in which I don't watch MTV, E!, or VH1.
I can't recommend Pop Up Video enoguh, it's the perfect laundry show, it requires no attention whatsoever, but if you do actively watch it you come away all the better for doing so. Simply, the show plays music videos from the late 90s onward. The episode I watched had Salt n Peppa, "Dead and Gone", "I'm Glad," and more. What I appreciated about it most was the trivia they threw up on screen, like the bit about a man stunt doubling for J-Lo in the "I'm Glad" video.
The show is like having your Itunes be on shuffle, with the IMDB trivia page occasionally popping up on screen in little fact bubbles. VH1, produced a show that I would watch, and that is a MAJOR accomplishment for them. Hopefully they'll think of more I'll enjoy in the future.
Matt Brickell is a columnist and typically only watches VH1 for the reality shows.
