On Monday I watched the premiere of Terra Nova, the other new show from Steven Spielberg, this one without aliens. This show is a great almagamation of several different movies or genres, drawing aspects of dinosaur sci-fi, time travel sci-fi, future sci-fi, and family dramas. That last one gets built up a bit since the first three are pretty obvious, but balanced around each other it turns out better than you'd expect. The first episode (episodes? I think it was two shown as one big block) set the scene for us, even though the first hour was kind of a fleshing out of the 30 second commercial summary. There were a lot of characters introduced, so none really got built out that well, but over the course of the season hopefully they'll get their own back stories or side stories. It also set up some future plot points for the film, but probably gave away two many details that could have been bigger reveals down the line once people started trying to predict it. If you are over your horrible relationship with Lost, and don't mind a sci-fi oriented character drama, then Terra Nova is your new fall show. Sorry I couldn't post more, but I didn't want to spoil too much, so below you'll find a ton of random thoughts I had while watching the show.
Keep in mind, these were written as the show was going, so some questions may get answered later in my notes...
Population control makes some sense. "A Family is Four" is kind of catchy propaganda.
"Inhale Exhale Repeat" is an amazing slogan for rebreathers.
So he broke out of maximum security prison after he was put there for having a third kid, but they don't really outline how he did it except giving him a laser pointer. Guess they ran out of time.
All this science and the environment is still kicking our asses?
Is he really smuggling the kid in a backpack?
Glad security actually saw him sneaking in, way better security than most shows.
The portal definitely reminds me of the CERN setup.
"Dad will find a way." Replace "Dad" with "Life" and sounds awfully Jurassic Park.
Sprint to the past! Take that slow security guard reaction times!
Damn, almost bowie knifed the kid in the backpack, close one.
[Commercials make me miss Netflix streaming. Guess it's just Netflix now.]
Panoramic shots make me think of Pandora.
Are they in our past, or another past?
They have MP5s? That's the best 2149 has?
The whole settlement is a big ring with a farm in the middle, pretty epic looking.
The gun emplacements on the settlement remind me of Starship Troopers, and the main house reminds me ofJurassic Park.
The soldiers look like they're wearing the space Marines armor from Aliens.
Nice Northwestern shout out, still a solid Medical school I guess.
Good to be valuable in the future, no skills makes you more worthless than normal.
The dad was in Narcotics in CPD! Sick!
They have a wind farm! Not messing up the environment again. And dad got stuck working in agriculture.
Holy shit, their house is really nice! Would've expected much less space and way cheaper digs.
This show is a bit overly dramatic, should probably tone it down a bit.
Zoe is a cute kid, brings some awe to the whole surroundings.
Son is a total asshole, and wait a second, what about the mass extinction eventually?
Brontosaurus isn't real, isn't it? Glad they can just hand feed them though, big cows.
Lots of soft light, and this family has some serious issues to work out.
Have to drink smoothies before they get used to real food.
The probe they sent back told them this was a separate time stream, take that continuity issues!
They have wood fences, really? And giant centipede, ew!
Obviously the son meets a cute girl on his first day.
Ew, guess medicine passes as slapping a giant leech on some guys back.
Is the time fracture a static time distance back? How do they know when the pilgrimages will show up?
OTG! Cool! (Sarcasm font still needs to be figured out)
"Howler" apparently describes a type of dinosaur. Glad they just jump into waterfalls too.
Wouldn't so many things in a prehistoric jungle kill you?
There's writing out on random stones, is their intelligent life out in the jungle?
Apparently the waterfall area is off limits, Taylor (boss from Avatar) doesn't want people out there.
Sixers? Criminals? Are they from the sixth pilgrimage?
Yay, dad rescued Taylor! Good job!
Older daughter likes cute soldier, but she's nerdy. I'm sure that won't work out.
Sixth pilgrimage made their own settlement, not clear why.
Nice aerial view of the camp.
Is the dad's name Shephard? How many action heroes are named Shephard?
Sixer transports coming in! Carnotaurus, sixer got eaten! Nice!
Sonic cannons on the turrets, why does it have to be non-lethal?
Badass chick is the leader of the sixers, definitely the respected enemy.
Sixers have quarry of meteoric iron, guess that's valuable.
Wife doesn't like that dad's a cop again.
The kids have a contraband distillery in the jungle. Wouldn't that be better at camp?
Pandora swipey screen technology! Nice!
"It's about the children", aaaaawwwww.
Taylor's son drew the equations on the walls?
Slasher tail, another dinosaur, nocturnal, so night times bad news.
Oh Josh just got told by Sky! Burn!
Another sixer got ghosted! Shit!
Slasher tail like a chunky velociraptor.
Apparently Taylor was the first through the fracture and spent 118 days alone. The fracture seems to be inconsistent.
Clever use of the transport by the director, being attacked, but don't have to show much of anything.
I think Tasha died, good to know they'll kill good guys.
Aw, the soldier boy is nice, nerdy sister lucked out.
Damn it, Tasha lived to make the mom useful. Stupid.
Nice, there was a soldier named Rocco.
Incurable diseases in the past, apparently that's how Sky's parents died.
Mira, the sixer leader lady, is a pain in the ass.
Scrawny kid of course got attacked after they said he wouldn't.
Kid got slashed, but same wound not fatal to him as was to the bad guy. Damn inconsistencies.
Dad saved the son! Yay! Mira saved her guy, very sneaky.
Taylor asked Sky about the falls, what the fuck?!
Taylor's son was the one that drew on the rocks, I guess he's trying to find a way back to the future?
Daw, happy family at the end.
